How I Spent AED 1,000 Exploring Sights, Eats & Entertainment in Dubai

There’s nothing quite like testing Dubai’s magic on a budget. Last weekend, with exactly AED 1,000 in my pocket, I set out on a whirlwind day trip packed with skyscraper views, a taste of Emirati culture, mouthwatering street eats and a little adventure—all while staying mindful of costs. Here’s exactly how I did it—and how you can, too.

Sunrise at Al Fahidi Historic District (AED 20)

I kicked off at 8 AM in the atmospheric lanes of Al Fahidi Historic District, formerly known as Bastakiya. A cup of kadak chai and a sweet date pastry at Arabian Tea House set me back AED 20, but felt priceless as the morning sun lit up the ochre wind towers. Wandering museums and art galleries here is free, and I soaked up traditional Emirati life without spending another dirham.

Abra Ride to Gold and Spice Souks (AED 2)

Next, I strolled to Dubai Creek and hopped on one of the wooden abras for just AED 2. This 10-minute splash across the water is one of Dubai’s most authentic—and cheapest—experiences. On the Deira side, I spent an hour marveling at glittering gold displays and inhaling heady spice aromas.

Arabian Street Lunch: Shawarma & Laban (AED 25)

By noon, I was hungry. A chicken shawarma wrap from a street cart cost AED 15, with a cold laban (yogurt drink) at AED 10. The total of AED 25 fueled me for the afternoon ahead without any sacrifice on taste.

Burj Khalifa ‘At the Top’ Observation Deck (AED 149)

No one-day Dubai itinerary is complete without the Burj Khalifa. I pre-booked my 2 PM slot for “At the Top” tickets at AED 149, which includes access to levels 124 and 125. From up there, the sea of skyscrapers, the Palm Jumeirah and the Arabian Gulf look almost surreal.

Dubai Mall Exploration & Fountain Show (Free)

Once back on ground level, I wandered through Dubai Mall—window-shopping in its mega aquarium tunnel and enjoying free daily fountain shows at 3 PM and 6 PM. These choreographed water dances to music never fail to impress and cost exactly AED 0.

Afternoon Coffee with Views (AED 35)

By 4 PM, I needed a pick-me-up. I headed to The Burj Club café on Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard for a cappuccino and a date brownie. The total came to AED 35, but sipping coffee with the Burj Khalifa in my skyline view was a small splurge worth every dirham.

Sunset Camel Ride at La Mer Beach (AED 100)

Late afternoon, I caught the tram to La Mer Beach (tram fare integrated into my day pass below) and joined a group camel ride at AED 100. The golden sands, graffiti art walls and warm breeze at sunset created postcard-perfect memories.

Sunset Tram & Metro Day Pass (AED 20)

To get around swiftly between Creek, Downtown and La Mer, I grabbed a day pass for AED 20covering both Dubai Metro and Tram. This cost-efficient pass saved me time and let me hop between districts without worrying about single-ride fares.

Dinner at Global Village (AED 150)

As evening fell, I took a tram+metro combo to Global Village (entry AED 15). Once inside, I feasted on a platter of Emirati mandi rice and chicken for AED 60, washed down with fresh sugarcane juice at AED 15, plus a Turkish ice cream cone at AED 20. I also enjoyed live performances and carnival games (another AED 40 spent on rides and games), totaling AED 150 including entry.

Dessert Stop at Karak House, Karama (AED 30)

On my way back toward the Metro, I detoured to Karama and treated myself to a decadent rose-flavored kulfi at Karak House for AED 30. The creamy, cardamom-spiced ice cream was the ideal sweet finale.

Evening Dhow Cruise on Dubai Creek (AED 200)

Finally, I wrapped up my day with a one-hour dinner dhow cruise along Dubai Creek at AED 200, complete with live oud music and finger foods. The illuminated skyline drifted by, offering a tranquil counterpoint to the day’s high-octane adventures.
